We all can get locked in our own little world immersed in what we love and never really pay attention to the bigger picture. I can sit for hours on end either computerizing newspaper articles or simply reading a good book. I try not to pay attention to the bigger picture as I would rather be in a good mood and not wound up over what some idiot pol- itician or criminal (sometimes one and the same) has done or is planning to do. When I am in the GMC (now with over 309,000 miles) I listen to music on XM radio. Just could not take those advertisements any- more, especially the political ones. When I am in the offi ce it is the television I use for background noise. I mostly watch sports because you do not have to really watch or history programs, but I can also watch some really dumb things. I fi gure it rounds me out. Despite how well you insulate yourself from the bad things life hands out from time to time, it will eventually knock on your door. Have you ever got that wakeup call, someone close to you has cancer or some other life-threatening disease? Sometimes the prognosis is good, but other times you know that their time is limited. Over the years I have had my share with my father passing when I was 12, an ex-wife gone from ovarian cancer when she was in her forties, and two years ago my present wife, Ann, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was extremely fortunate. Having been a chemo nurse for a number of years she knew what to look for and when she saw something that was not right she did not hesitate to see a doctor. Her prognosis is extremely good, but we still keep our fi ngers crossed. Over the years I have noted the loss of
many good people to cancer or some other medical issue while covering coast. It is a sad part of life. The unfortunate aspect is that some of these medical issues are self infl icted. I am not against healthcare as such, but should we not be teaching people to be a little more conscious about the ramifi cations of some of the things they do before they develop an extreme medical issue? This summer over 1,400 will compete, including my wife and Ashlee Lowery of Boothbay (Ashlee heads the Boothbay Harbor Lobster Boat Races and her hus- band is a double cancer survivor), in the Maine Cancer Foundation’s Tri for a Cure in South Portland on 26 July. Ann competed two years ago and this did not go quite as planned as we ended up in the emergency room at Maine Medical Center. She has been swimming, biking and running trying to get in shape the last few months. Now the push is on with just a month to go. The reason for the Tri for a Cure is to raise money to reduce the incidence of cancer in the State of Maine. They support education, hospice, prevention, research, screening, support, survivorship and trans- portation. The goal is $1,500,000 and they are more than a third of the way there. There are a lot of very worthwhile organizations to give to, but this is one I would hope you would consider supporting! Thanks. To donate:
