MISS KARLEE was increasing her lead and crossed the line with a speed of 42.9 mph. Was there more? May be we would fi nd that out in the Diesel Free-for-All or the Fastest Lobster Boat Race. In Class M(A) (40 feet and over, up to 500 hp) there was just ELSIE H. so she was combined with Class M(B) (40 feet and over, 501 to 750 hp). This could be anyone’s race as on the line was HAULIN’ ASH, J BUG, and SAND DOLLARS III. It was surprising to see J BUG jump into the lead by three boat lengths, followed by SAND DOLLARS III and HAULIN’ ASH. In the last diesel class race of the day, Class N (40 feet and over; 751 hp and over) we were missing Tom Clemon’s new boat. He said that he had about two more weeks worth of work to do and hoped to have her done for Stonington. His other problem is that those who were helping are now back fi shing and he hoped to be able to get them to work when they were not out hauling. He did bring 4 GIRLS [Wesmac 46, 1,000-hp Caterpillar] and three other boats came to the line: Keith Jordan’s BAILEY & BELLA [Calvin Beal 44, 1,000 hp Caterpillar]; KIM CELESTE and REVERENCE. 4 GIRLS has been a dominate boat in this class, but usu- ally was just beat out by Andrew Johnson’s WHISTLIN’ DIXIE [Holland 40, 1000-hp
Caterpillar] for fi rst place. He would be the odds-on favorite to win today, but who would come next? As they came across the fi nish line 4 GIRLS was out in front by four boat lengths with KIM CELESTE second, BAILEY & BELLA third and REVER- ENCE fourth.
The Gasoline Free-for-All was a repeat race between LITTLE GIRLS and BLACK DIAMOND, with the same results. Ten boats came to the line for the Diesel
Free-for-All and what a sight it was to watch them all heading up the course for the fi nish line. MISS KARLEE was on the right hand side with LISA MARIE on the left, but mid- way up MISS KARLEE had the lead but not by much. They would fi nish one-two with third going to JENNA MARIE.
Now we wanted to see MISS KARLEE and LITTLE GIRLS battle it out, but it was not to be as Ed Shirley said MISS KARLEE would not be racing in the fi nal race of the day. Questions swirled about why: some said he would have to really push her to get a win; she was not yet completely dialed in; and others wondered with some spies fl oating around he did not want to show his hand as of yet. So on the line was LITTLE GIRLS and LISA MARIE with the win going to LITTLE GIRLS with a speed of 46.6 mph. We started the race just after 1000 hrs. proving we can start on time and we were
