The refurbishment of Hampton Dental combines modern and period features

alking through the doors of Hampton Dental evokes a sense of opulence – a feeling not usually
associated with a dental practice. Inside, they have mixed the period features of the Georgian structure with clean lines and modern décor. The unique styling offers a calm yet contemporary space in the historic building. The clinic, with a 30-year history in
oral surgery, is in the heart of Dublin. The Hampton Dental team is headed up by Dr Ronan Allen, who specialises in periodontology and Dr Edward O’Reilly, the team’s prosthodontist. Also at the practice is endodontist Dr Derek Duggan and the resident orthodontist, Dr Paul Dowling. In the early stages of the project, Edward
and Ronan decided to enlist the help of Liz Dolan from Mortar and More to assist them with the design, part fit-out and management of the project. As the premises are listed as a protected structure, they had to ensure they were sympathetic to the building while designing a clinic that would provide patients with the most modern, up-to-date and safe treatments in a comfortable and relaxing environment. Edward said: “We wanted to start our
new practice with all the most cutting- edge technology available to ensure the best quality patient care at every level.
The non-clinical areas were designed to ensure a relaxed and calm atmosphere so patients feel comfortable and at ease prior to treatments and consultations.” They knew what they wanted to achieve
with the practice, but needed some assistance with the design. Their interior design team planned the layout of the rooms and incorporated a neutral colour scheme. Edward said: “The main focus for the colour scheme was to ensure calm and contemporary design with injections of bright and warm colours throughout.” For the design of the treatment rooms,
they had the support of their equipment supplier, Dental Medical Ireland (DMI). They didn’t have any specific ideas about what the room should look like, but it was important to them that they could work ergonomically in each of the four surgeries. The team thoroughly
researched their equipment selection and knew the importance of choosing the right equipment. They visited numerous trade shows and equipment manufacturer showrooms. They also found visiting other practices and talking to other clinicians about their opinion of what works really helped them with their decision. Ultimately, they chose A-dec equipment for their new clinic. This came down to the
they opted for A-dec 500 dental chairs. The chairs were combined with luxurious sewn Ultraleather upholstery in a neutral papyrus colour, bringing the design and colour scheme into the treatment rooms. Additionally, they chose the award winning, wall-mounted A-dec LED light keeping the room as clutter free as possible. The white cabinetry gives the rooms a clean and contemporary feel and the Corian worktops colour match to the chair upholstery, ensuring a consistent theme runs throughout. For the hygienist’s room, they selected
the hardworking A-dec Performer LR+ dental chair with smooth, seamless upholstery in the popular steel colour, along with the A-dec halogen light. Although they are not bound by
HTM 0ı-05 guidelines as practices in England are, sterilisation was still a very important factor for them. Their centralised sterilisation room means they can guarantee with complete confidence the highest standard of cross-infection control for their patients. They also created a basement floor education centre that offers a lecture facility and hands-on training venue for up to 30 delegates. When asked why they chose the A-dec
500 chairs for his and Ronan’s surgeries, Edward said: “We felt this chair was an excellent piece of equipment with regards to comfort, durability and performance. As clinicians, it is so important to have a reliable chair and units for peace of mind and effective patient care.” Several patients have commented on
the comfort of the dental chairs in the practice. Edward said: “Our patients have all said that the new chairs are really nice to be in. Patients also love the feel of the new place and are always commenting on the mix of the old and new. Colour is mentioned a lot and patients say that they find the environment relaxing and so comfortable.” Their advice to anyone else tackling a refurbishment like theirs is to get professional help. “We found that using an
architectural designer along with the expertise of the guys at DMI meant that most problems were sorted before they could arise,” said Edward. “Liz Dolan at Mortar and More was a
big help in getting the project finished on time. DMI have great experience and were really helpful from beginning to end.”
