Page 22 Pat Focuses On Charities
Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at the charities you support, and more importantly what happens to the money you donate? Well we are about to find out! Hopefully after reading more about the charities it may inspire you to give some time, think of them the next time you clear out your wardrobe or have a new look in the house, or maybe make a dontation. Every little helps.
Easy Horse Care Centre Foundation
The Easy Horse Care Centre is the only horse rescue foundation in Spain. To become a foundation, it took a lot of work, form filling and a long time!
A foundation has to be registered to a government department, in this case with the Ministry of Fishery & Agriculture, so that it can be given an official registration number and have the Ministry as its Patron. Sue and Rod opened the Centre 8 years ago, and after spending a large amount of their own money to get it up and running, they now have it well organised. To fund the centre, they now have 8 charity shops and 2 more in the pipeline, which helps pay the 4000€ it costs each week to cover the outgoings such as food, vets fees, farriers, medication and some in-house surgery. Because of the poor condition that some of the horses arrive in, they may need special medication and special shoes. The shops are run by volunteers, but as with most charities, they are always looking for more people to help them. All the shops are well supported, as are the fund raising events. The shop in La Zenia is big enough to sell furniture so if you are getting rid of furniture please think of them, and the Guardamar shop is run totally by Spanish volunteers. Sue and Rod really appreciate all the work that everyone does for them and for all the donations and support that they get from the public.
There are now a staggering 92 horses, ponies and donkeys, 8 dogs, 14 cats, 2 parrots, a goose, chickens, peacocks and a very large pig that have all been rescued and are now living at the Centre.
The Centre works closely with the
government, police and local Town Halls, and because of this, cases of animal abuse are now going to court.
The Centre covers a vast area from Benidorm to Granada, and as some of the rescued horses are custodians of the court because of the circumstances in which they were rescued, those horses have to spend the rest of their lives at the Centre. They also work closely with the Donkey Sanctuary in Malaga with whom they liaised recently with the rescue of 3 mares and 1 stallion from Granada. The horses were starving and very weak, but they were the lucky ones as there were also dead horses in the field with them. The Donkey Sanctuary paid for the horses to be transported to the Centre where they were seen by the vet. 2 of the mares were in foal and they have recently given birth, so the Centre now has 1 month old Arthur (top photo), and 2 weeks old Galahad (seen with his mum in the bottom photo). At the moment they are a bit like Bambi, all legs and a bit wobbly!! The
washing machine was going
constantly, 90 plastic feeding buckets were being washed and the stables were being mucked out. It may have been a Sunday, but it was just another working day at the Centre. If you are interested in volunteering in any way, please contact Sue on 652 021 980 or
