End of season work is vitally important. What is
not carried out at that time is reflected in the next season’s pitch performance. In so far as the budget is concerned, I work closely with the cricket committee and try to ensure a healthy bank balance is in place by August.” From my visit, I could tell that that the club is in
safe hands, with such a large number of passionate members working hard to ensure the future is bright. Without this hardcore of dedicated volunteers,
clubs like Bromsgrove would cease to exist. We need community sports clubs; they are, without question, valuable assets for the local community, they offer so much and, importantly, a safe haven for the development of children in sport, providing a springboard for the next generation of sports stars.
Footnote: As we were going to press, we
learned the sad news that Robert (Bob) Green passed away suddenly on Saturday 11th April at his home and will be sadly missed by Bromsgrove CC and all that knew him.

Seeing Lord’s in all its glory for its first Test match of the summer can still take your breath away, such is the beauty of the presentation.
Mick Hunt has been preparing pitches at the home of cricket for over forty-five years and constantly being in the media spotlight has not dampened his enthusiasm for his profession.
In a recent interview with Pitchcare, Mick commented that he treats the Test wickets with kid gloves; “if someone looks at it we get angry! We’re probably a bit over protective of it at times, but it’s a big deal. This year is the Ashes, which is the big one. The sense of relief comes when the last match before the Test is finished and we can concentrate on protecting it.”
By his pure professionalism alone, Mick has been a true ambassador for the turfcare industry and his beaming smile projects the composure of a man in total control of his surroundings.
Whilst it might be possible that he is like the proverbial swan - calm and serene on the surface, but paddling furiously below - the summer presentation of Lord’s is almost pure artistry.
Bring on the summer, bring on the Ashes and bring on another Mick Hunt Test pitch.
