Warehousing plan for KIG site

ADEVELOPERis gearingupto do battle with residents of Holling- bourne and Bearsted as it presses ahead with a proposal for an in- dustrial development on part of the land once earmarked for KIG. Roxhill Developmentswas due to address Hollingbourne Parish Council in the Cardwell Pavilion, arguing that the scheme would ac- tually enhance the countryside, rather than detract from it. Roxhill is distributing 2,000 leaflets to homes in the area sup- porting its planning application, due to be submitted as the Downs Mailwent to press, which includes planting 7,000 trees, enhancing the waterways and creating ponds for wildlife. Development director Charles

Blake says it is essential that mod- ern industrial developments are lo- cated near motorway junctions and believes his scheme could provide up to 1,200 much-needed jobs. The site allocated by Roxhill is at Woodcut Farm – part of the contro-

versial site rejected by a planning inspector five years ago for the Kent International Gateway (KIG), a 112- hectare road and rail freight depot. The Roxhill site would see 4.8 hectares developed and have park- ing for 560 cars. Mr Blake claims the company will create a wood- land area buffer to the west, sepa- rating it from the residential part of Ashford Road. Once developed, Roxhill would

plan to sell the industrial part of the site to a land-holding company, while handing the woodland to a local trust or parish council. It is believed the company is al-

ready in discussion with two pos- sible tenants for the site, which would contain 14 warehouses, in- dustrial and office buildings. A similar warehouse plan for

Waterside Park, on the opposite side of the A20 Ashford Road, has twice been thrown out by Maid- stone Council and is now the sub- ject of an appeal, due to be heard in May.

Repairs to St Mary’s Church in Thurnham are now considered to be urgent

Grant bid to repair church roof

THE vicar of Holy Cross Church, Rev John Corbyn, has applied for grant aid to help repair the roof at St Mary’s Church, Thurnham. Problems were identified 10 years ago, when the architect for St Mary’s, Rena Pitsilli-Graham, recommended renewal of the roof. More problems surfaced in her quinquennial survey five years ago

and the cost of repairs is now estimated at about £150,000. Other work has been completed in the meantime, including major

work on the tower and, in recent years, there have been repairs to the main roof. A closer inspection at the end of last year revealed that the renewal of the roofwas now urgent. The vicar has applied for a grant under a one-off Government scheme for repairing church roofs, guttering and drainage and is awaiting the outcome.

Tattoo studio

A TATTOO studio could operate from the same premises as a pot- tery painting shop in Maidstone. A planning application has been submitted to add the additional retail use to Renaissance Crafts, run by Bearsted residents Geoff and Tim Licence, at 16 Starnes Court, Union Street. Maidstone Council will decide whether the tattoo business is an appropriate use of the building.

Squirrel issue

SQUIRRELS are causing dam- age to the roof of Bearsted Li- brary by jumping onto it from a nearby willow tree. The rodents have been dam-

aging roof tiles of the building on The Green, according to a conservation area application byKCCthat seeks to relieve the problem by pruning two stems of the tree. Maidstone Council will de-

cide.
