On-call fire crew needs your help

PEOPLE who live in the Lenham area are being asked to join Kent’s on-call fire and rescue service. KFRS has begun a recruitment campaign for its on-call fire stations and is looking for people whowant to make a difference to their com- munity. On-call crews work with full-time colleagues and partner agencies, dealing with emergency situations such as road accidents, fires, and flooding. Being an on-call firefighter is a

vital part of the local and wider com- munity, providing an essential emergency service, says KFRS. Lenham resident Bruce Mathews

(57) joined KFRS in 1976 and has been a crew manager at Lenham for 12 years. Married with two daugh- ters and two grandchildren, he says the hours fit around his day job as a postman. “My day job starts and finishes

early, which means I amable to offer on-call cover overnight on week- days, usually from about 6 or 7pm. “I find the role fits inwell withmy work and family and has a good de-

gree of flexibility, so I can plan my life around my hours. Being an on- call firefighter has improvedmyskill base and it’s rewarding toknowthat whenmypager goes off I’ll be doing something to help my local area.” In Headcorn, advertising consult-

ant Kieran Killeen (48) has made some great friends and finds work- ing for the fire service has given him a sense of teamwork and job satis- faction. Station Manager Paul Ramsden

said: “We want to challenge the stereotype that only a certain sort of person can be an on-call firefighter. You’ll receive all the necessary train- ing and take part in regular courses throughout your career to maintain your skills.” There will be a drop-in evening for people who want to know more at Lenham fire station on Monday April 20, between 7.30pm and 9.30pm. Email stephen.browne@kent.fire-

uk.org or call 01622 692121 (ext 7403) for more details or just drop in. Kent Fire and Rescue Service will be recruiting up to April 30, 2015.

Council gets solar energy

SOLAR energy is powering Maid- stone Council’s depot, after the in- stallation of solar panels. Local company Greener Eco in-

stalled the panels on the building in Bircholt Road, Park Wood. The move will reduce carbon emissions by 340 tonnes during the next 20 years and save £236,000.

Maidstone Council’s cabinet member for the environment, Cllr Marion Ring, said: “This is a win- win situation. We’ll be keeping an eye on how effectively this works at the depot with a view to installing renewable energy technology across all council-owned buildings in the future.”
