seek election MEMBERSof a campaign group are hoping to save the countryside by winning seats on the parish council. Harrietsham Against Reckless
Development (Hard) was set up to protect the village from a string of large housing developments. Despite planning applications for
370 homes being given the go- ahead in the past four years, the group is fighting to prevent two further developments (see spon- sored page on P20) earmarked by the parish council in its emerging neighbourhood plan. Parish council elections take
place on May 7 alongside borough and parliamentary elections, and members of Hard will aim to win election so they can protect these two sites – totalling 185 homes. Aspokesman for Hard said: “The current parish council repeat the same defeatist lines about it all being down to Maidstone and not having any power to change things. “It’s wrong to take this attitude –
other parish councils have got be- hind their residents and by work- ing together are influencing Maidstone decision makers. “We will take out Tong’s Meadow and Court Lodge Road straight away. We’ve already taken our fair share of housing.”
Fire crews save historic house
FIREFIGHTERS have been praised for their professional han- dling of a major fire at a large Georgian house in Thurnham. Four fire appliances, awater unit
and a support pump went to the blaze in Thurnham Lane and crews managed to prevent the fire spreading, containing the damage to one wing of the property. Station manager David Nolan,
who was officer-in-change at the incident, said: “Thermal imaging technology was used outside to analyse the fire spread and monitor its temperature, which helped de- termine fire-fighting priorities. Ini- tial tactics were purposely aggressive towards limiting the fire which had spread up from the ground-floor drawing room to the first floor behind wood panelling and two stairwells of the property.” A compressed air foam system
was applied to the building to stop the fire spreading outside. Six teams of firefighters entered
the property on the ground and first floors. They used thermal image cameras to detect hotspots,

whichwere extinguished with hose reels, using water supplemented from a bulk water carrier. No one was hurt in the fire,
which is believed to have started in some books and other paper items that were accidently placed too close to an open
fire.Aresident and five dogswere led to safety. Mr Nolan said: “I am extremely
proud of the crews who worked so hard with one clear focus on saving this wonderful property. “Unfortunately there were no
smoke alarms fitted at this prop- erty. [They] may have lead to ear- lier detection. If a fire had started in the night when the occupant was asleep, it could have been life- threatening.”
