Party raises cash for sick colleague

REGULARS and staff at the Or- chard Spot in Downswood held a paintball day and party to raise funds for their fellow bar worker Beverley Hartley. Bev had been working at the club

for more than eight years when she was diagnosed with motor neurone disease shortly before Christmas. She had been having problems for

several months but the diagnosis was not confirmed until December. The muscle-weakening condition

means Bev is no longer able to work and she recently lost her ability to speak. The situation is all the more tragic

as Bev had been caring for her daughter, who suffered a stroke four years ago. Aspart of her treatment, Bev,who

lives in Rainham, has been paying out of her own pocket for costly tablets developed in the US but not available on the NHS. Carl Mayne-Wheeler rallied the regulars for the event in the hope of raising £500 to help Bev, so was

thrilled to find the total topped £1,300. He said: “Bev has been a good

part of our lives for over eight years now and become close to us all through the pub and outside of it. “Our single aim here for the day

and night was to try and raise as muchmoney for Bev aswe possibly could.” Motor neurone disease can take

several forms and, although incur- able, there are treatments available which can ease symptoms and dis- ability. Its most notable sufferer is Professor Stephen Hawking.

Emperor’s New Clothes The Leeds pantomime THE ideal English village requires five things – a church; a post of- fice/shop; a school; a public house and a pantomime group. Leeds vil- lage has lost the second but it has an excellent fifth. The Emperor’s New Clothes did

the village proud. The castwas huge and the backstage crew was also huge. The sets and costumes were lovely. Lights, sound and backstage showed team work. Lesley Finlay was the director. Carole and Charlotte did a ster-

ling job as Lor and Order, security for the emperor, a lovable old codger played by Adrian Lovis, whose blushes were spared with thermals in the parade. Jane Steele, the wicked duchess, almost scared

the children in the audience into si- lence. A handsome prince and a princess with the voice of a lark added romance and Astrid Finlay was a kindly Fairy Lights. The whole cast performed with gusto, and Rodney Bridges on the piano held things together. Itwas all great fun and a real community effort.  The pantomime review in last month’s Downs Mail was printed in good faith, but it has since been pointed out to us that it was, in fact, a review of last year’s pantomime in Leeds.
