and waste management compa- nies and is either delivered into the sites by the customer or collected by UKWR.
Hadfields and UKWR work with all their customers to ensure that wherever possible, timber arrives already segregated into the four common grades of waste wood, (A, B and C). Each grade contains different types of wood, with A+ being the cleanest grade and C containing mixed woods such as MDF and melamine-faced timber. Once on site, the waste wood is segregated further to remove any non-wood materials, such as metals, soils, plastics and glass, which can be recycled elsewhere. The resulting raw material is then cleansed in specialist cleaning equipment before being manu- factured into either biomass fuel or one of the other products pro- duced by the company. In the case of the Wilton 10 biomass plant, UKWR’s contribution helps to save more than 200,000 tonnes a year of carbon dioxide emissions com- pared to a fossil fuel power station of a similar capacity – equivalent to around 67,000 vehicles a year. Having successfully launched UKWR, Hadfields expanded further with the opening of a third site at Tilbury Docks in Essex. The Tilbury site enabled Hadfields to expand its product side of the business generally, including exporting biomass fuel to Europe. It is now proud to be standing as one of the biggest exporters of biomass fuel in the UK, supplying companies
such as Söderenergi AB, which operates the massive Igelsta com- bined heat and power (CHP) plant in Sweden.
Group Business Development Director Vicki Hughes believes be- ing able to supply customers with a consistent supply of good quality fuel is the key to the company’s success.
“We know from speaking to biomass project developers that inconsistent quality in fuel supply is one of the biggest issues they face,” said Vicki.
“As a product manufacturer we understand that making to specification is paramount so all feedstock is inspected on receipt at our sites, segregated and then put through a range of processes and fixed plant to ensure consist- ency of supply and quality.”
Such attention to detail has also seen Hadfields named as an official ‘Biomass Fuel Supplier’ on a UK Government-approved list. The long-awaited Biomass Sup- pliers List (BSL) was announced last year and allows individuals and businesses to find companies compliant with the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme when buying their biomass fuel. Inclusion on the list means that the company has been recognised as providing fuel sourced from sus- tainable and auditable wood fuel supplies and made up of at least 90% biomass. “Being included on the BSL was another accolade for us, proving we take our respon- sibility to this market place very seriously,” confirmed Vicki. In the past two years, the company has invested £5 million

further developing its sites to ensure they comply with new Health & Safety and environmental legislation, and to improve service levels. This includes installing the UK’s first Pyrosmart technology system at all its sites. Pyrosmart monitors and detects heat changes in wood piles and raises an alarm if heat is detected above accept- able levels. The system will ensure the fastest possible detection if an issue arises.
Last year, the company recycled 275,000 tonnes of waste wood, which saw it named the ninth fastest growing business in the UK’s waste and recycling sector by international corporate finance firm Catalyst Corporate Finance. Having three facilities enables Hadfields to move its wood from site to site, allowing it to recycle 99% of everything it receives. Over the course of its lifetime, it has diverted over two million tonnes of wood from landfill. “At Hadfields we firmly believe in offering the best service we can in everything we do,” continued Vicki. “That runs right through from the level of service we provide to our customers to the quality of our finished products and that’s something we intend to keep doing for the next 35 years and beyond!”
