Parking charges at park Organ recital
PARKING charges are to be intro- duced at the popular Cobtree Manor Park, near Sandling. The park, run by the Cobtree Manor Estate Trust charity, is maintained by the council on the trust’s behalf. Following a £1m+ improvement programme, which has seen the introduction of a new visitor cen- tre and cafe, children’s play- ground and nature trails, the trust has decided to introduce a charge
of £1.50 per day to help pay for its upkeep. The visitor centre and café are
due to open in May, when the new charges will be brought in. Regular visitors will have the
option of purchasing a £40 annual season ticket. There has been a 700% increase
in visitor numbers to the park in the past three years, but this means more grounds mainte- nance, more litter picks and more
staff working longer hours to keep it up to the standard which earned it a Green FlagAward in 2014. A spokesman for the trust said:
“We appreciate visitors’ support for the park, and hope that they understandwe’reworking hard to make sure that the charity can af- ford to keep the park to the stan- dard that we know they expect. “All income raised will be rein-
vested in the park to keep its cur- rent high standard.”
Plea for church funds Plan to fell Mote trees
THE Friends of Leeds and Broomfield Churches have made an appeal to the Heritage Lottery Fund to help with vital repairs to the structure of Leeds Church. The quinquennial report, held every five years into
the condition and structure of churches, revealed major issues with the stonework, the north side tiling and the lead guttering on the tower, as well as nu- merous smaller items. Because an appeal for funding involves meetings
with English Heritage, among others, it is unlikely there will be any decision until much later in the year. In the meantime, work continues to improve the in-
ternal decoration of Leeds Church. The Friends undertook the cleaning and re-hang-
ing of the curtains following internal repairs and re- decoration.
42 Maidstone East March 2015
PLANNING permission was granted to fell three pro- tected trees atAudley Mote House in Mote Park. The applicant claimed a holly tree was in severe decline, an oak was in poor condition and an ash should be removed for the purpose of access to a de- velopment site. The trees are all in a wooded area west of the entrance drive toMote House, which is a retirement complex. One resident of Mote House objected to the re-
moval of the “magnificent 50ft ash” and Maidstone Council agreed that it had “good amenity value, being in a prominent position”. However, the officer report added: “Following the
removal of the holly, it will stand apart from the main group of trees and as such will make little con- tribution to the group as awhole.”
ACCLAIMED organist Philip Scriven will be performing at Holy Cross Church, Bearsted on Sunday, March 8. The international musician will
