Parade takes trip around the world

SCHOOLS, charities and volun- tary groups in Maidstone are get- ting the chance to go ‘“Around the World” as part of plans for this year’s Maidstone Parade. The event takes place on Satur-

day July 4, when up to 40 walking groups will parade through the town centre. Parade project manager Barbara Dunford said: “This is the chance for schools and voluntary groups to get involved – and show their creative flair.” Groups will get financial assis-

tance with their costumes and there will be training and support to help with costume-making – so it’s a chance to learn some new skills too. The Around the World theme

also gives those involved a fantas- tic opportunity to create some in- novative and colourful costumes. Mrs Dunford said: “With live

music and bands pounding the beat, the parade is a chance for par-

ticipants to – literally – bang the drum for the county town!” The spectacular is part of a pro- gramme of events being organised over the summer by the Maidstone Town Team. Details can be found on the Town Team website and facebook page. Sponsors are being sought to

help individual groups and Mrs Dunford would be delighted to hear from any businesses which would like to sponsor a walking party. Individual group sponsor- ship starts from as little as £50. About 20 groups took part in last

year’s parade, but this year’s is ex- pected to be even bigger and bet- ter. However, with a maximum of 40 groups, it will be a case of first come, first served. Although still six months away, groups who want to take part are now being invited to register their interest by contacting Barbara Dunford on 01622 630584 or email info@kentcommunityevents.co.uk.

Adrian Clee of the Salvation Army and Derrick Law, of Keemlaw, put together the kitchen starter packs

Starter packs for ‘new lives’

THE first batch of kitchen equipment donated under a “kitchen amnesty” has been delivered to the Salvation Army. Keemlaw, which owns Catering Complements in Maidstone’s Market Buildings, collected the second-hand kitchen items, allowing customers to benefit from a part exchange value on their unwanted items against a new purchase. The Salvation Army is using the items to put together home starter

packs, providing basic kitchen equipment for those starting a new life. The kitchen packs are customised to suit the needs of the recipients. Derrick Law, director of Keemlaw, said: “Don’t throw away your old

things, if they are in good condition, we will part exchange them.” Keemlaw is offering a part exchange value on unwanted tableware, glasses, utensils, pots, pans or bakeware.

Hospice store seeks new premises

THEHeart of Kent Hospice has closed its flagship store in Maidstone after 20 years in business. The charity said it recognises the thousands of pounds raised by

the shop and café at Starnes Court and by its volunteers, but it was, sadly no longer making any money. A spokesman for the hospice said: “We have made the reluctant decision to close the shop and relocate to amore central area of Maid- stone. We appreciate how disappointing this is for our staff, volun- teers and customers. We applaud their commitment and loyalty and look forward to welcoming both volunteers and customers to our new Maidstone shop.” Aswewent to press, the hospicewas still looking for premises.
