COACHING CONSULTATION BUILDING ATTACKS AND RECOGNISING OPPORTUNITIES

last year’s Goal of the Season by Dean Cox against Gillingham. A terrific shot by our striker from outside the box completed a 20-pass move involving each player receiving and passing in a move that took in all parts of the pitch.

Kevin Nugent: “This fantastic goal was born out of the 8v8 with zones practice featured in this session. Outside of some fine interplay on the right-hand flank, the move uses supporting players at both ends of the pitch, ensuring that any player running into space is supported so as to keep the move alive.”

Coaching considerations

Players must constantly be moving for each other, looking to break into space, and always aware of opponents potentially closing them down. Recycling the ball is a vital part of this session, and although the end zones are big, we would rather players take a measured and

indirect route to goal, rather than rush the opportunity and lose the ball.

Why this works

Although this session takes the form of a basic passing set-up, cementing the true elements of possession play is vital. In itself retaining possession is a simple task, but it only comes with practice.

While we progress parts of this session with the introduction of defenders into the end zones and, if desired, goals and keepers, the important part must always be in keeping rules and restrictions in place wherever possible so that players build the sense of being in possession with a purpose.
