Building attacks and recognising opportunities Q. I have talented players, but they panic too readily and give the ball away. What can I do to help them instill confidence in their play?
Question asked by Robert Swift, an Under-17s coach from Ringoes, New Jersey, USA.

Your question is typical of the fact that more and more teams nowadays are sitting deeper, making them harder to break down.
Of course, being patient in possession is easier said than done, but it is something that’s learnt over time and is vital for teams who want to be successful. So here’s a session that should help – it showcases a simple set-up yet the philosophy is built around the ability to wait and recognise opportunities to play forward and create chances, which includes recycling the ball when necessary.
We’ve been lucky enough to score a number of goals through sustained possession in the past couple of seasons, but the one that really stands out for me is

You can vary the pitch size to suit numbers or to manipulate the intensity of play in a match situation, but the basic rule is the same, with the team in possession looking to play the ball into the opposition end zone. Players cannot wait in the end zone prior to the pass being made, so must time runs to where the ball will be played,
The red player makes a run to receive in the end zone, with a square supporting player in place in order to ensure possession is retained and the move continues back the other way

Important: You will find the session is as relevant for defenders working a way out of trouble as it is for attackers looking for space in the final third.

In the progression, defenders are allowed to press red players in the end zone
To progress the session defending players can now press and enter the end zone in order to close down space and hurry attackers. Defenders can only enter one at a time though, and can only track the player on the ball, not the square attacker. We can progress this part of the session further by adding goals and keepers.
