Plumpton scoop top awards
More accolades for the East Sussex racecourse groundstaff
Following their success in being selected as the 2014 Groundstaff of the Year in the National Hunt category, the Plumpton Racecourse team picked up the overall award at the RCA Showcase & Awards event at Haydock in November.
The award was won despite tough opposition from other category winners, Hamilton (Flat) and Carlisle (Dual Purpose).
The award recognises excellence and innovation, and the judges were particularly impressed with the team’s work with the local community. Each year, a local youngster with learning difficulties is given the opportunity to gain valuable work experience alongside the groundstaff. The scheme proved so successful that one of the youngsters was taken on full- time at the end of his training.
In addition to the overall team award, Clerk of
the Course and Head Groundsman, Mark Cornford, received a lifetime achievement award. Having worked at the course for over thirty years, the judges commended Mark on his efforts in overseeing widely recognised improvements in the track as well as a significant investment into the development of the Parade Ring.
The awards were presented to Mark and the groundstaff team at their prestigious New Year meeting at the beginning of January.
