News Len is VIP guest at dance school

STRICTLY Come Dancing judge Len Goodman joined 100 guests at the GDC School of Dancing in Lenham to mark its 13th birthday. The school, which specialises in ballroom and Latin American danc- ing, is run by Karen Day, one of his former pupils. She was delighted that the inter- national star was able to join the party, adding: “It was so kind of Len to come and join us, I know he has an incredibly packed diary. We had some very excited children, and adults alike.” It was a double celebration for

the school, which has learned that it will get a new studio as part of the redevelopment of its current

site, after fears it could be demol- ished.

Karen said: “Len chatted to guests, signed autographs and posed for photos in his usual enter- taining way.” He also presented medals to

pupils who had completed their re- cent dancing exams, including Molly (10) and Alice (five). Mum Sarah Kershaw said: “They were beside themselves with excitement at the thought of meeting Len Goodman and he turned out to be just the most charming and charis- matic man ever. Hewas so friendly and interested to hear about their dancing, and the club. Itwas a sur- real experience and Molly went to

Footpath ‘iswaste of money’

A PROJECT to improve a footpath along theA20Ashford Road east of Maidstone has been branded a waste of money. KCC is carrying out work on the

footway between the junction of Roundwell, near Bearsted and Musket Lane, near Hollingbourne. Speaking at the Maidstone Joint Transportation Board (JTB) Cllr Richard Ash, ward member for Bearsted, said: “There is a totally

new footpath but how much has this cost? Surely there is something more important to spend our money on than a rural footpath. “Did Thurnham Parish Council

want it, did the local KCC member want it? When money is tight we have to prioritise.” Cllr Paulina Stockell, chairman of

the JTB, responded: “I disagree. We do need footpaths in the rural area.”

Parking plans at railway station

THERE is renewed hope that more parking spaces could be provided at Bearsted Railway Station. For years passengers and resi-

dents have called for the former railway goods yard inWare Street to be used for parking to relieve parking near Bearsted Green. Now Maidstone Council’s draft

local plan has earmarked the listed goods shed and weigh- bridge house in 2011 along with

station building to be converted into 20 homes, but only if parking at the station is increased by at least 10 spaces. Cllr Ian Chittenden told the planning scrutiny committee: “I know the proposal is for only 10 spaces – I would like to see 20.” “But 10 is better than nothing,” pointed out his LibDemcolleague Clive English. The committeewas in favour of the proposal.
