Maidstone Borough Council 3
New warnings to help people with food allergies
Since 13 December, all food businesses have been required to tell customers if any of 14 allergenic ingredients is in the food they sell or provide. Previously, supermarket bakeries, delis, cafes and restaurants selling loose foods didn’t have to provide information to customers about food allergens, but legislation now means that those with food allergies can find this information through menus, from staff, or through sign-posted information.
The primary cause of food allergy deaths in the UK is due to allergic reactions when food is consumed outside the home where allergenic ingredients have not been declared.
Maidstone’s environmental health officers have been supplying information and telling businesses about the new rules during routine food hygiene inspections. For advice and guidance on the new rules, contact KCC Trading Standards on 03000 412000

What you should do in an emergency! No one thinks it will happen to them – until it does
No matter how careful you are, there are some things you can’t control. And any one of them could hit you and your family hard, damage your home severely, or seriously harm your business.
Yet it’s not hard to make sure that you’re properly prepared for an emergency. Thinking about what you’d need to do in an emergency will mean that you’re ready should they happen. Emergencies can include floods, fire, extreme weather, infectious diseases, security incidents or loss of power and water.
You can find lots more information in the “What Should I Do in an Emergency?” handbook, which you can pick up from Maidstone Gateway or download from our website by searching for “Emergency Planning”.
