Orange Park Acres resident Kelly Shippey (front and cen- ter) recently competed in the World Food Championships in Las Vegas. Shippey entered her southwest blackstrap slider in the burger division of the contest, and merited 13th place in a field of 50. Seen here, she anxiously awaits the burger standings to appear on the scoreboard. Com- petitors were professional chefs and cooks, caterers, restaurant owners, former winners and those like Kelly – home cooks. Shippey earned the right to compete in Las Vegas by winning the title of Best Burger in a San Diego cooking competition.

Angels show up at Oakridge The student council at Oakridge Private School introduced a new theme for its annual winter dance.


Renamed the “Gift-giving Dance,” student tickets to the event were gifts that had been requested via an angel-shaped tag on the school’s Christmas gift tree. The gifts were donated to Providence Community Services, which provides mental health and non-emergency transportation assistance in 44 states.

St. Norbert’s Catholic School student council created a Giving Tree adorned with requests of senior citizens served by the church’s Christian Service Ministry. During the three weeks before Christmas, students in grades preschool-eighth brought packages containing toi- letries, nutrition drinks, grocery gift cards and other practical items to provide for the seniors’ wishes.
