Retirement retreat in the

heart of Sherwood Park T

he love of gardening comes natu- rally to Linda; she inherited it from her mom. They didn't have

nurseries to buy plants from in the small town of Cut Knife, Sask., where she grew up. Her mom made do by split- ting her perennials and trading with neighbours. "After I left home I went back with my shovel and took some of mom's perennials with me. I still grow the same pink bleeding hearts that my mom had when I was a kid. I think of her every time I look at them. It's nice to have some of mom's plants and see them continuing on," says Linda. Since the day she plundered her moth-

er's plants Linda's been creating gardens in every yard of every home she's lived in. Now, semi-retired she has more time to dedicate to her passion. Over the last 13 years, she and her husband, John, have transformed their home into the ideal retirement retreat. The year after they moved into their

Sherwood Park home, the Beards enlisted the help of a landscaper from Greenland Garden Centre to offer them some pointers and aid them with plan- ning their yard. Using their plan, John cut the shapes of the gardens, built brick planters, hauled in 10 yards of top soil to the back yard, then trenched and installed a sprinkler system and low voltage lighting.

Planters overflowing with colourful flowers welcome visitors.
