Samantha Lauro found a home – and spread her wings – here at Penn State Abington.

When you travel overseas 30-40 weeks of the year, you gain a different perspective. In my career in international business, I learned about people’s cultures and tried to focus on our similarities and shared needs. I developed a keen sense of the qualities needed in those I hire. I often found a glaring lack of understanding of how people live in the world – especially among young people who come from a cloistered background. That’s why I support programs like Penn State Abington’s Center for Intercultural Leadership and Communication.

My experiences at Penn State formed the basis for my future success. They taught me how to think and gain the determination and commitment to succeed that carried through to my career.

I’ve also discovered a passion for giving back, which I think is important for people who have the means, ability and desire. The nice thing about endowing scholarships is that I’ve had the opportunity to meet some of the student recipients. It’s been rewarding to have that experience and associate where the money goes beyond just a name on a piece of paper.

When I was searching for the right school, you might say that Penn State Abington actually found me. I’ve always been a huge fan of Penn State but knew that I didn’t want to go far away – so Abington was perfect. I was able to stay close to home and it was a small campus feel, which I was really looking for.

Receiving the Harold J. and Eileen M. Taub Family Scholarship was an enormous help to me. Not only was I able to pay bills but was also able to work less – allowing me more time to focus on academics.

But, for me, Penn State Abington is so much more than the finances. I had a mentor throughout my college career that I could rely on if I had questions. He met with me and shared his personal experiences. It was invaluable information that you can’t put a price tag on. Having him be there – supporting a total stranger – meant so much.

The scholarship not only helped me financially but also showed that no matter how busy you are, you should always find the time for someone else.
