WECARING ARE

Every day, Donna Monk sees the benefits that come from our Wellness Center.

I lucked out when I met my wife, Donna. While I was at Penn State, she worked as a registered nurse and then stayed home to raise our children. As they got older, she worked as a school nurse and helped me start our family construction business.

Then we found out Donna had cancer. I wanted students to understand how to take care of themselves. So I chose to create a health and wellness endowment in my wife’s name at Penn State Abington because I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for Penn State. I became friends with professors, taught night school and had doors opened by people along the way.

My wife is now cancer-free and spends a lot of time with our five grandchildren. Donna Monk, who runs the health and wellness program, does a fabulous job getting students and faculty involved. We couldn’t ask for anything better.

In 1968, Penn State had to accept me as a student because I was a veteran on the GI bill. But over the years it’s become like “Cheers,” where everybody knows your name and makes you feel like you belong.

One day I heard some students talking outside my office. They were blown away by an alcohol awareness program we held here with a man who drove drunk and killed three of his closest friends. Recently, a faculty member brought me a beautiful jade plant in appreciation for having the opportunity to learn how to meditate. On any given day, a student or employee will stop by the Wellness Center to say thank you for the chance to participate in a wellness event. A staff member even told me that she tripled her daily steps, thanks to a walking program we ran in the fall.

That’s the kind of impact I see every day from the programs made possible by the Donna L. Caddick Endowment for Health and Wellness Education. Every week, we promote good health – through yoga, walking events, zumba and meditation. We also offer monthly programs on topics like depression, sexual assault, stress management, nutrition and drug and alcohol awareness.

I adore Dave Caddick, who I refer to as our Health Center’s guardian angel. I feel sincerely privileged to know him and am deeply committed to his mission to promote health in our campus community.
