DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ZONE Dana White Says Fighters With History Of Domestic Violence Aren't Eligible For The Ultimate Fighter

Domestic violence became a hot topic in sports with multiple videos of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice knocking out his fiance at a casino surfaced. Shortly thereafter, Bloody Elbow reported that UFC light heavyweight Anthony Johnson's ex had filed for a restraining order, citing a history of abuse and threats. In the wake of that report, Johnson was suspended by the UFC, but that case was voluntarily dismissed by the woman involved and the UFC has ended Johnson's suspension.

Dana White spoke at day 2 of the '14 NeuLion Sports Media & Technology Conference and touched on the company's approach to domestic violence (transcribed by Sports Business Daily):

"We screen people for „The Ultimate Fighter,‟ and if you‟ve ever had a domestic violence, you can‟t get on „The Ultimate Fighter.‟ Since this whole thing happened, we‟re beefing up our policies with putting your hands on a woman. ... [The] Ray Rice thing, as horrible as it was, is actually turning out to be a very positive thing because a lot of these leagues are really looking into this and trying to make a difference." Iowa Treatment Program Shows Promise In Curbing Abuse Erika Lawrence, a University of Iowa professor, has designed a less confrontational treatment method that is working for Iowa men in community corrections programs, cutting the rate of recidivism in early research results from a 22.9 percent rate of violent re-offenses one year later with the old treatment methods to 13.4 percent with the new. UI's Erika Lawrence says her program is now being sought in other states.

Lawrence's treatment, first launched with the Iowa Department of Corrections as a pilot program called Achieving Change Through Value Based Behavior, emphasizes recognition of angry feelings, emotions and then sitting with them, suffering through them, and not acting on them because those actions go against your values.

"A lot of what we do is slow down what is an automatic process. My wife is yelling at me, I get upset and it just happens. We take a step back and look at the emotions. When you get angry or anxious, you notice all that and take a moment to ask, 'What are my options? What is important here?' It might be their freedom, not going back to jail, or it might be their relationship."
