Nursing Home and Healthcare Facilities Tasked with Keeping it Safe
On October 1, 2014 Maryland Senate Bill 483 (Chapter 513) went into effect. The Act requires that certain sized nursing homes and health care facilities assign to a committee the task of assessment of workplace safety issues and make recommendations regarding them. In addition, those facilities are required to establish a ―workplace violence prevention safety committee‖ tasked with establishing a ―workplace violence prevention safety program.‖ ―Workplace safety‖ means the prevention of any physical assault or threatening behavior against an employee in a nursing home.
Nursing homes that are licensed for 45 beds or more must assign to an ―appropriate committee‖ the tasks of conducting an annual assessment of workplace safety issues and making recommendations to the nursing home for reducing workplace injuries. The committee assigned to conduct the assessment is to consult with geriatric nursing assistants and other employees of the nursing home who are involved in assisting residents with activities of daily living.

Workplace Violence in The Health Sector: What are the Consequences?
Exposure to violence in the workplace can lead to serious consequences for health sector employees say Stéphane Guay and Nathalie Lanctôt of the Institut universitaire de santé mentale and the University of Montreal, who studied this issue in a systematic review of the literature. "This sector is particularly prone to violence since health personnel are 16 times more likely to be victims of or witnesses to acts of violence compared to other public service personnel," explains Guay. "Most of these acts are committed by patients or their relatives and can cause many adverse effects. However, to date, no literature review has identified all the consequences that victims or witnesses of workplace violence may face."
After a rigorous selection process, 68 studies were included in the review. The results revealed seven types of consequences that may result from acts of workplace violence:
"These results demonstrate that the consequences of workplace violence are not only profound but also multiple," concludes Lanctôt, of the University of Montreal's School of Criminology.
