Homeopathy for Winter Illnesses

a deeply effective means of treating a myriad of physical and emo- tional symptoms. Homeopathy originated in 1796 with the innova- tive work of German physician and chemist, Samuel Hahnemann, M.D. Hahnemann’s pioneering work showed a deep understanding of the mind-body connection; it was strongly influenced by the concepts of alchemy. The founding homeopathic principle of “like cures like”

evolved from the early teachings of Hippocrates, who is consid- ered to be the father of Western medicine. Both Hippocrates and Hahnemann observed that a similarity exists between the symptoms caused by an active substance in high doses and the symptoms relieved by the same substance in ultra-low dilutions. The central philosophy of homeopathic medicine is based on
the practice of using tiny doses of natural substances to stimulate the body’s inborn healing capacity. Homeopathic remedies act by stimulating the body to react to an illness instead of suppressing symptoms. Such remedies are derived from natural resources that are recognized to have a therapeutic effect; they are non-allergenic, non-toxic, and free of side effects. Homeopathic remedies are manufactured and controlled by the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the U.S. and the F.D.A. Laws that govern their manufacture are outlined in the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938. Homeopathy has been proven to be an efficacious treatment for both acute and chronic illness. In acute illness there is a clear etiology and the disease is self-limiting. In chronic pathology there is a weakness in the vital force that prevents an acute illness from ending quickly. A person’s vital force sustains the balance of the homeostatic biologic systems. The symptoms of winter illnesses, including influenza, can of- ten be curtailed with acute homeopathic prescriptions. One of the great success stories of homeopathic medicine concerns its superb treatment of epidemic influenza during the 1917-1918 flu season. Records maintained by government medical officers at the time show that proportionately far fewer patients treated homeopathi- cally died from the flu or its complications than those who received conventional medical treatment, Everybody’s Guide to Homeopath- ic Medicine by Stephen Cummings MD, Dana. omeopathy is a time-honored form of medicine that has been practiced with worldwide acceptance for over two centuries. It has been well documented that Homeopathy is
Many homeopathic remedies for influenza can be found at local pharmacies and health food stores; 30C potency is the recommended dose. If symptoms worsen a person should seek professional medical care. Homeopathic remedies can be used in conjunction with pharmaceuticals but are not a substitute when severe pathology is present. 1. Oscillococcinum: This remedy can be helpful during the first 48 hours of influenza. The symptoms often present with fever, chills, headache, migratory muscle pain and malaise. 2. Gelsemium sempervirens: The person experiences malaise
and headache with a heavy sensation throughout the body. The per- son feels mental dullness, drowsy and droopy. There is often a
of thirst with a strong desire to lay quiet. 3. Bryonia Alba: Motion and pressure aggravate the symptoms.
The person often lies still because of physical pain not fatigue. They can be irritable and do not want consolation. Striking symptoms are thirst for cold drinks and aggravation in warm rooms. A dry, hacking painful cough may accompany the influenza. 4. Eupatorium perfoliatum: The hallmark of this remedy is
severe aching pain as if the bones are bruised or broken. The person is restless and moves to try to relieve the pain although motion does not alleviate their discomfort. Prior to onset of severe body aches the person may have runny nose, sneezing, and red eyes. Chills are present yet the person is thirsty and desires cold drinks. Integrative Medicine and Homeopathy instill the words of wis- dom from Benjamin Franklin, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. It is better to prevent health problems than to have to fix them. Well -balanced nutrition and restorative sleep hygiene in combination with constitutional homeopathic treatment can reduce susceptibility to illness.
