Research from letting agent Jordan’s claims that single buyers are struggling to find the perfect flat for one, as couples cram into smaller properties and split costs, fuelling the demand for one-bed properties. Latest figures from the Office


of National Statistics (ONS) shows the number of people living alone in the UK has now risen to 29 per cent of all households. The cost of living a single life in 2011 also rose to more than £5,000 a year according to a study by Co-Operatives UK. With the number of one-


person households on the increase, the letting agent claims there is a real shortage of properties suitable for solo renters.

MORTGAGES Mortgage Talk arranges the first


Specialist new build broker Mortgage Talk has completed the first NewBuy mortgage in the UK. Mortgage Talk, part of the Mortgage Advice Bureau New Homes Network, helped Henna Rai become the first borrower to take out a loan from Nationwide; she completed on a two-bedroom apartment in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, built by Bovis Homes First-time buyer Heena said, “I’m in a bit of a daze really. I was really shocked that we managed to get it all done so quickly.” NewBuy is a Government


supported scheme, designed by the Home Builders Federation and the Council of Mortgage Lenders, to assist both first-time buyers and existing homeowners to buy a new- build property priced up to £500,000, as their main residence in England. Nine house builders have signed up to provide a guarantee for each mortgage and it is backed by four major high street lenders – Nationwide, Barclays (Woolwich), RBS (NatWest) and Halifax.
