50. It’s been more than my dreams.” Daws knew from the start that he wanted
to be involved in trucking, but he says he also understands what is hurting the numbers of available drivers these days as well as affecting companies. Times since 1976 have obviously changed. “Te young people don’t want to get into
this industry,” Daws said. “It’s a hard-working industry. We do flatbed, and there is a lot of physical work involved. Tere are better jobs out there. Government regulation is chasing a lot of the older guys out of the industry. And the younger guys hear all about the regulations and decide they want to do something else. “Now the regulations, a lot of that is for
safety and I get all that, but sometimes they go a little overboard on a little of that. It’s not allowing people to stay in the industry or to get back in the industry.” But, he also quickly adds that all is not
doom and gloom for trucking in the near future. “I think some of the things over the next two or three years are going to be positive for
the trucking industry,” he said. “Until this driver thing plays out and we see where we are, we’ll have to see, though. Tere will be more regulation. Cleaner engines are where we’ve been going, and the things we need to keep working on to are keep working on our air, keep everything more green. Our safety level has been getting better and better in recent years. We’ve just got to keep people working. I think it’s a positive climate for the trucking industry.” As for Daws Trucking, its chief says,

“We’re busy. It’s real good now. It’s going to be a good climate for us. We’re going to be able to raise our rates a little bit. It’s going to be good.” Daws says he plans to stay around the
business for the foreseeable. He has plenty of
time and opportunity to travel, and his wife has retired after 17 years as a teacher and 19 more as a school principal. “As long as I feel good, I plan on going for
a long time,” Daws said. “I enjoy working and I have a good management team in the office that allows me to be out. Basically, I’m going to be working until I don’t feel like it.” Nt
