School marks centenary of combined cadet force
ACENTURYofmilitary operations at Sutton Valence School was marked with a day of parades and celebration. The origins of the school’s com-
bined cadet force (CCF) go back to 1914whenthe schoolwas given per- mission to have a platoon of infantry and two officers. To mark the centenary, cadets
were on parade at 9am before dis- playing a variety of skills and activi- ties. Commander Graham Turnbull RN carried out the biennial inspec- tion before touring the stands with headmaster Bruce Grindlay and contingent commander Lt Colonel AnneWilkinson. More than 200 cadets, officers and
guests then attended a service in the school chapel. In the afternoon, staff, parents, vis-
iting officers and the CCF enjoyed the Band of the Corps of Royal Engi- neers marching and playing in the school quad, followed by a display from the CCF’s drill squad. During the parade, Old Suttonian Melissa Saggers flew over the school
in her Percival Prentice – an RAF plane built in 1946 and one of only two in the world still flying. Addressing the parade, Com- mander Turnbull said: “I have been very impressed by all I have seen today. You should all be very proud of your CCF.” The Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr Richard Thick; the High Sheriff of Kent, Hugo Fenwick; Sir Hugh RobertsonMP;Brigadier Chris Clay- don, Commander of 2 (South East) Brigade and Deputy Constable of Dover Castle and other guests en- joyed the ceremony of sounding re- treat, played by the Band of the
Corps the Royal Engineers on the school’s lawn. In the evening, guestswere joined
for dinner by parents, senior NCOs of the CCF. Mr Grindlay said: “When head- master Holdgate established the CCF at the school in 1914, he said it would bring the pupils’ smartness – ‘a sense of discipline and duty, and that training that every good citizen ought to have’. Inthat respect, things have not changed much. The CCF still complements the academic, leadership and co-curricular aims of the school in preparing pupils for adult life.”
