News Homes plan for
commercial site A PLANNING application has been submitted to replace four commercial buildings with three detached houses in Headcorn Road, Sutton Valence. The planning application also re-
quests the demolition of a bunga- low called Greentops. A proposal for eight detached homeswas with- drawn due to concerns over the scale, layout and design of the de- velopment. A supporting statement said the commercial unitswere no longer fit for use. The parish council was support-
ive of the scheme but requested an extension of the 40mph limit past the site.
Resident Ian Robinson said: “The bungalow, Greentops, was de- stroyed by fire a few years ago – there are caravans there now. “The cost of the proposed hous-
ing is likely to exceed what people would be prepared to pay in an area of fast traffic, attendant road noise, no facilities, poor bus service, dangerous access/egress, pollution and noise from an adjacent land- fill/crushing/quarrying type of op- eration.”
Maidstone Council will deter- mine the application.

Rowers give children’s charity a £13k boost
ROWERS who took part in a rowathon raised more than £13,000 for West Farleigh charity Dandelion Time. Dandelion Time supports chil-
dren and young people trauma- tised by abuse, neglect or having early life attachment difficulties. It held the indoor rowing event
at NMA Fitness in Marden, invit- ing teams and individual fundrais- ers to help complete a total of 1,000 miles, non-stop, for three days and two nights – covering the distance of Marden to Monte Carlo. Cllr Paul Carter, leader of KCC,
led a team from KCC, who rowed more than 10,000m in 50 minutes, raising £1,000. Many participants had never
rowed before but they took to the challenge. Among them was Tom from
Richer Sounds, who arrived on the Friday morning to install a televi- sion. He had a quick turn on the row-
ing machine and was hooked, re- turning on both Saturday and
MP Helen Grant with Rowathon participants at NMAFitness in Marden
Sunday to row a total of 20km. There were also competitive
timed challenges for teams, indi- viduals and families, which en- couraged more competitive rowers to compete and each challenge had its own leaderboard. The Chequers Racers from Laddingford – normally found on their bikes – stopped by and en- tered the McCabe Ford Williams Team Challenge. They gave it their all and went to top of the leader- board, while MoiyaWatt (60), from Marden, who has two titanium plates in her head, after suffering a
severe injury, managed to row 25km in an hour. The event had a nail-biting fin-
ish, as the charity rowers reached the 1,000-mile target with seconds to spare. MPfor Maidstone and theWeald
Helen Grant rowed the final few metres, along with Frankie, from Frankie's Farm shop, Staplehurst and ex-Olympic rower Liz McVeigh. Anyone was invited to partici-
pate and many families, teams and individuals all from the local com- munity joined in.
