If you’re looking for something a little less energetic, a trip to St Patrick’s Cathedral can bring to life the history of Dublin from Norman times to the present day.
The cathedral provides a wealth of learning possibilities across history, art, architecture and religion. The First World War is being remembered especially this year with a unique Lives Remembered exhibition.
A tour of the cathedral can also be combined with a free workshop, giving students a chance to take part in some hands-on activities while learning more about the cathedral’s history. In the Stained
Glass Windows workshop, for instance, students make beautiful coloured stained glass windows using craft materials. The Exploring Sound workshop allows students to learn about the science of sound and the musical history of the cathedral. Working as a team, students play the model organ – the WOOFYT (Wooden One Octave Organ For Young Technologists). The Medieval Workshop encourages students to think about how the cathedral was built, who used it and what life was like inside it. Students participate in a range of different activities including using quills and ink to create a medieval script, creating brass rubbings, exploring an interactive map of medieval Dublin and arch building.
