St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin has recently opened an exhibition called ‘Lives Remembered’. At the centre of the exhibition is a new monument called the “Tree of Remembrance” which remembers all those who have been affected by conflict. Visitors to the Cathedral will be invited to tie small tags with thoughts, memories or prayers for loved ones affected by conflict. For more see :

2013 Scratch Winner : Shane Fanning , St. Conleth’s Community College Scratch competition open to young programmers


The Irish Computer Society (ICS) will launch the 2014/15 Scratch Competition on October 17th coinciding with EU Code week with the National Final to be held in May 2015. Sponsored by Lero challenges students to create stories, games and animations using software, encouraging innovation and creativity; and giving them a taste of possible future careers in IT. This is good news for Ireland’s IT sector as an estimated 44,500 new ICT professionals are going to be needed by 2018. Uptake and interest in Scratch is increasing as more schools become aware of the programme and its benefits with over 3,000 students from 599 schools participating in the ICS Scratch programme.

Smart Futures is a collaborative government-industry initiative promoting science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) careers to post-primary students in Ireland, enabling them to benefit from industry guidance to explore future STEM career paths. Events and initiatives in the Smart Futures series include: Free school visits by trained science researchers and engineers. The Smart Futures Transition Year Work Experience programme The Smart Futures Video Series A ‘one-stop’ website providing students, teachers and guidance counsellors with real insights about a career in STEM In 2013, 28,000 students engaged in Smart Futures related careers events, competitions and online channels. To date, over 50 STEM- related organisations in ICT, PharmaChem, Medical Devices, Space, Engineering and Energy sectors have participated in Smart Futures outreach activities, providing staff to talk to students during events such as Science Week, Engineers Week and SciFest. As part of the Action Plan for Jobs 2014, Smart Futures is committed to training 400 Industry volunteers to engage with schools over the coming academic year.
