Chance to buy some rare plants

IT IS satisfying to see the in- dependent grower holding his own in the face of enormous competition from multination- als and ubiquitous garden cen- tres. Of course, the small growers

need as many opportunities as possible to show off their home-grown-plants. They can choose local mar-

kets, charity plant sales, and any and all of the big shows like Chelsea, Hampton Court, Gardeners World and so on. Rare Plant Fairs (RPF) was launched more than 20 years ago in Bristol to give the buy- ing public and passionate gar- deners a chance to buy rare and unusual plants. The success of these shows

today illustrates that this need is still there and it is growing year by year. RPF provide a venue for sales

at some of the oldest and loveli- est houses and gardens in the country. Also, each nursery with its

own variety of plants is listed at rareplantfair.co.uk The main purpose overall is

to introduce buyer to seller in a tranquil and agreeable setting. Just make contact through

the website or Facebook, or Twitter, and the group will make sure you are kept in- formed of every show through- out the year.-It’s all free. There will be 15 locations in

the southern region in 2014 – all of them on Sundays and all offering modest refreshment. The Red Plant Fair takes place at Llanover House, New- port this Sunda. Call 01845 4681368 for details. Entry prices are around £5
