THE Dunwells are a Leeds based four- piece made up of brothers Joseph and David Dunwell and cousins Robert Clayton and Jonny Lamb. They were drawn together by their shared love of bands like Bon Iver, Elbow and Damien Rice and they’ve been making music together since they first met in school. With one album under their belt and several rounds of successful touring in the US and UK, The Dunwells know their career is only beginning. And they have not let any time go to waste. Despite the hectic schedule of constantly being on the road throughout the last year, the band found time to write an all new set of songs, mostly during late nights in hotel rooms. Having been inspired to work with pro- ducer Steve Harris (Kodaline, Kaiser Chiefs) after hearing Kodaline’s High Hopes, the band set about tracking Steve down. The band’s collaboration with Ste-

ve has resulted in an incredibly emotional set of songs, heartfelt lyrics and four part harmonies to melt even the hardest of hearts. The Show Me Emotion EP was re- leased on September 8.

How would you describe your music style? It hard to describe I think it has lots of influences. Its guitar music with an acous- tic feel and loads of vocals as we all sing.

What’s been your best live experience? One of the best shows we have played

so far was when we played Red Rocks in Colorado it was our first amphitheatre

show, there was 6000 people there it was ace.

You some new releases available can you tell us more about that? Our new single Show Me Emotion came

out on September 8, along with an EP. We are so proud of this and can’t wait

for people to hear it. Its a new sound and a change of direction for the band. The album will be out next year but we

will be releasing some more music be- tween now and then. It’s pretty much finished but we are still writing all the time.

Kinks legend still rocking

“Rock bands will come and rock bands will go, but Rock and Roll music will go on” announced Kinks front man Ray Davies to a packed au- dience at St David’s Hall on Sunday evening, as he launched into All Day and All of The Night. The statement, midway though a 90 minute set large- ly made up of Kinks classics, was stark recognition from one of music’s greatest inno- vators. Davies has been cred- ited for contributing much in the way of diverse music over the decades, yet clearly he is quite bemused by all the accolades, introducing The Kinks 1966 hit Sunny Af- ternoon as “a sing-along song I wrote for my family that turned out to be a big hit.” Davies took to the stage af-

ter a strong opening session from acoustic folk duo Lucas

and King, who performed some fabulous original mate- rial and a memorable cover of Mystery Train. The pair were the perfect compliment to Davies’ own down to earth approach, which warmed him to the audience from the offset — as did his acknowl- edgement of all things Kinks. There were renditions of I’m Not Like Everybody Else, Dedicated Follower Of Fash- ion, Waterloo Sunset and a rare performance of Tired Of Waiting For You. Davies also previewed songs from his forthcoming Americana album (a world

premiere, as he hasn’t even recorded them yet). All songs were in keeping with the traditional Kinks style and given an almost con- cept feel as he read passages from his Americana book. Ray’s 5 piece band of tal- ented musicians did much to help recreate the ener- getic urgency of the songs and had the audience on their feet and dancing mid- way through the set. Davies himself was first to encour- age participation, particu- larly on sing-along versions of Days and Lola. Perform- ers and audience all had the time of their lives and would have kept rocking All Day and All Of The Night had they had their way. Long live Rock and Roll and the music of Ray Davies!

You’re touring shortly are you looking forward to that? We are so excited about going on tour

and to play loads of new material. The rehearsals have been sounding amazing, not long now until we’re on the road. Our hometown Leeds show just sold out and its the first night of the tour.

Will you be coming to Wales sometime in the future? We are hoping to be in Wales early next year. That would be brilliant.
