Zephyr Teachout for governor
that is pervasive in Albany under Gov. Cuomo. The governor and his old boys club better watch out, this challenge is serious and it isn’t going away,” Teachout said. Both Teachout and Howie Hawkins,
addressed the board before the vote. Kent said she had met previously with
incumbent, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican challenger Rob Astorino, who were invited to attend the board meeting but, due to scheduling conflicts, were unable to do so. However, Kent said he called her to say
he would be honored to have PEF’s endorsement and cited his willingness to be inclusive with workers. He said he has settled seven of the eight labor contracts under his authority as Westchester County executive. Kent said she had a phone call from the
governor during which she informed him if he wanted PEF’s endorsement, he should attend the Executive Board meeting in May
to talk to the board about issues of concern. The governor said he would meet with the PEF Executive Council. However, he later had to cancel scheduled appearances with the council in May and June.
‘So much to learn from you’ Teachout made a very dynamic speech
to the board, telling the board members they also know “what it’s like to have a governor who wants to get rid of you. You are taking care of the people of New York State and he has disrespected you as his employees and as professionals.…. I respect you all. I know how hard you work and how important your work is.” In response to a question from a board
member, Teachout said she opposes consolidating state services when it makes them less accessible to the public and reduces their efficiency. Too often, she said, consolidating state services is “just an
excuse for privatizing them.” The state should be opening facilities
and services, instead of closing them, Teachout said. In response to a question about taxing
stock transfers and other financial transactions on Wall Street, Teachout said she has been taking a close look at that issue and believes the state is losing out on billions of dollars in potential tax revenues. She scoffed at the idea that increased taxation would kill Wall Street and the New York City financial district. “The financial industry is not leaving
New York state,” Teachout said. When a member raised concerns about
public money lost through corruption, Teachout cited her experience in leading the Sunlight Foundation which works for greater government transparency. PEF Region 12 Coordinator Connie Batts
told Teachout, “Historically, we’ve had Continued on next page
