RETIREES IN ACTION

A message from PEF Retirees President Jim Carr Seniors: Look out for each other Have you ever been a caregiver for a

loved one, such as an elderly parent, an ailing spouse or a handicapped child? If you have, you know how difficult it is to get quality health care and navigate the health insurance system. Nursing care is cost prohibitive;

currently in excess of $100,000 a year for the average nursing home and it is not covered byMedicare. About six years agomy wife and I

decided to invite her father, aged 94 at the time, tomove fromhis home in the Adirondacks and live with us in our home in Chemung County.My wife and I had been providingmeals and long-distance care for himand his wife of 63 years for about four years prior to her death. During that time it became evident to us, that their doctors and the health care system had all but written themoff because they were in their 90s. Unfortunately, when we were with

either of themat their doctor’s office or in

the hospital, the doctors often would talk right past themtomy wife orme about their health, instead of speaking directly to her parent. Seniors are often

CARR

ridiculed and patronized, as if they are assumed to be demented and no longer competent. My father-in-law is still

with us and turned 100 inMay. He is very sharp, but needs an advocate when it comes to hismedical necessities. Anyone who is elderly, confused or sick definitely needs a health care advocate to look out for their best interests. We have a health care systemthat

consumes 17 percent of our national economy, but still writes offmany of our most vulnerable citizens, especially the elderly when they can no longer advocate for themselves. After living a long,

productive life, seniors who have seen triumphs and tragedies, booms and busts, revolutions and wars, great achievements and deep ambiguities should be treated with respect, not written off. As seniors who are retired, we can help

each other by sharing useful information and educating ourselves and the next generation of workers about the struggles and sacrifices of our parents’ and grandparents’ generations that have paved the way for us.
