The answer to the title question is of course, no. But, what should hospitals do to reduce the potential for incidents and to effectively respond when they do occur? Each Healthcare Facility should at a minimum take actions to assess risk and implement measures to reduce the likelihood of an adverse incident and provide an effective response if one does occur. These actions include: Conducting a comprehensive evaluation of your security program; Assessing your workplace violence policy; Establishing a threat management team; Implementing flag systems in the electronic medical record; Designing security into new construction and renovation projects; and Training your staff.

OSHA: Brooklyn Health Care Facility Failed to Protect Workers from Violence Employees of Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, were exposed to head, eye, face and groin injuries and intimidation and threats during routine interactions with patients and visitors, OSHA alleges. The medical center faces $78,000 in fines for failing to protect its employees against workplace violence, after OSHA launched an inspection triggered by a complaint. ―Brookdale must actively and effectively implement a workplace violence prevention program immediately to ensure the safety and well-being of its workers,‖ said Robert Kulick, OSHA‘s regional administrator. Brookdale has 15 days from receipt of its citations and proposed penalties to comply or contest OSHA‘s findings.
