Summertime and the living is easy?

Well I’m not so sure that’s true but how great to have a summer this year! To follow on from Bryan’s piece on the opposite page what is recruitment like in the AV industry at the moment and is August a good time to hire?

Well as I stated in the April edi- tion of AV News the AV Recruit- ment market is very buoyant indeed – that is there are loads of vacancies about in terms of Sales and Engineering but most people are fi nding them hard to fi ll.

Why? Well, I believe there are several reasons for this:

•There are so many jobs around candidates can pick and choose. Employers no lon- ger hold all the cards – candi- dates do.

•There is a skill shortage in terms of AV/VC/UC/IT skills – some employers are looking for candidates with skills in all of these and yet most candidates have skills in some of these and will need training in oth- er elements – often employers want those skills now and ar- en’t able or willing to train can-

didates who have 80% of what they are looking for. •Some

employers insist on

salespeople having AV indus- try experience and whilst this may be necessary in some in- stances, it isn’t in all. Why not look at good salespeople from a different technology fi eld (IT, Telecoms etc.,) and teach them about your products – selling skills are much harder to ac- quire than product knowledge. Is August a good time to hire? Of course I am going to say every month is a good time to hire! August in some areas of AV is quiet whilst in others it’s manically busy so if your busi- ness is quiet it’s a great time to train new people ready for the busy quarters coming up at the end of the year and beginning of next year. With a lot of senior personnel on holiday during August there may be fewer vacancies adver-

tised and therefore there will be less competition for your particular vacancy and hope- fully more candidates. You may need additional con- tractors if August is your busy time although I’m sure most of these have already been booked by you well in advance. Senior

Sales Managers and

Project Managers are always in short supply in AV (as well as in other sections of our growing industry) but if you know you are going to need them talk to us as soon as you are aware. We have some excellent candi- dates looking for opportunities in all sectors of the AV Market as well as some prime vacan- cies with key employers – if only the two could match every time we would all be happy!

The joys of recruitment eh?
