Breastfeeding advice...
H
ow you feed your baby is a very personal decision dependant on
many factors. You do not need to make any feeding decisions Antenatally but wait until your baby is born and being held skin to skin. All mothers, regardless of feeding intention, are given the opportunity to give one breast feed.
This first feed gives babies important antibodies which protect babies from germs giving them their first immunisation.
You will have opportunities throughout your pregnancy to discuss feeding.
Skin to skin contact as soon as possible gets feeding off to a good start and helps mother to learn feeding early cues and helps bonding.
Breastfeeding is a learned experience for mother and baby - give it time - your baby will work out what to do - the midwives and maternity support workers are there to help you.
Breastfeeding should be a rewarding and satisfying experience for both you and your baby, however some mothers and babies need more help than others. Each mother baby partnership is unique!
Top tip Find out about local breastfeeding support groups from your midwife - go along before the baby is born and see babies feeding - talk to new mothers to find out what you can do before your baby is born to help facilitate breastfeeding!
