s I write this month’s letter, our family is vacationing at a rental home on Lake Mille Lacs. What a great place! The owners call it the “House of Dreams” and it has a lot
to offer, including a stunning view of Lake Mille Lacs. This is our first family vacation with our five grandchildren, plus my sister and

her family. We spent some time researching what was needed to make everyone hap- py, as our list was long and varied: swim- ming, hot tub, games, sleeping for 14, fire pit for making s’mores, fishing, walking, room to spread out, a full kitchen, washer and dryer. This place has it all. Those who don’t have the time or money to take a full vacation, however, may want to consider a mini-getaway, as featured in our Healing Ways section this month. April Thompson writes, “Sometimes a long weekend in an inspiring locale is all we need.” We can make a list of all the fun things we can think to do in the area. Maybe we need to conduct some research first if we’re not sure. Some special places, such as Duluth, Stillwater, Minnehaha Falls and Como Park, invite us to spend an afternoon with or without an agenda. Those of us who are not outdoorsy might enjoy a matinee, a museum or the Mall
of America? As long as we’re making lists, we should consider the advice in this month’s
Wise Words article, “Be Happy Now,” and write down what makes us happy. Then we should schedule some happiness into each day by doing what we love. Every day. We don’t have to do it all, but we can do a part of it. We say we want to be happy, yet most of us continually postpone doing the very things that make us happy. We all have the power to increase our happiness at any moment just by changing our viewpoint. It helps to give thanks for all that we have and realize that no matter how bad things may seem, there are always blessings to appreciate. Natural Awakenings has an opportunity to make people happy: I am giving away
12 pairs of tickets to the annual Minnesota Renaissance Festival, in Shakopee. For details, rules and instructions on how to enter the drawing, visit

piness today.
