SUMMARY The dry cleaning industry worldwide is in a state of transition, and perhaps a secular decline. Economic problems have served to accelerate the move by consumers towards wash-and-wear cloth- ing, and revenues for the industry as a whole are falling. The pre- vious model of small, usually family-run, businesses is under immense pressure everywhere from rising costs, falling sales and, in some markets, the grip of large chains. GreenEarth and K4 are the dominant solvent ‘newcomers’, with
the other options remaining distinct ‘also-rans’. This includes wet cleaning, which doesn’t seem to have made much impression with the public. Aside from actual cleaning equipment, there doesn’t seem
to have been widespread implementation of new technology like 24- hour automated pickup and drop-off – perhaps due to cost and space limitations. Overall, the global picture doesn’t offer much comfort for Canadi-
ans. Based on the experience elsewhere, cleaners will continue to be squeezed between price-conscious customers and steadily increasing costs. The real question must be whether one of the large U.S. chains decides to expand across the border, though U.S. chains don’t necessarily succeed here (as shown in recent news stories).
