Massive Testing Facility in Texas Goes Wireless with
Chant Engineering I
n 1976, Chant Engineering (Chant) had expanded out of owner Jim Chant’s basement and into a rented garage, complete with the company’s first hired technician. What Jim had originally lacked in product and capital, both human and financial, in 1970, when he began his consulting firm from home, he more than made up for with engineering expertise, a sterling reputation, and unwavering work ethic. Chant today is recognized as a leader in
the wire rope and rigging test machine industry due to a strong track record of testing machines, systems and related products. Chant credits their current position to the state-of-the-art engineering, design, manufacturing, software development, and calibration services with a team of some of the best engineers in the world. While Chant’s testing machines and systems can be found in
some of the most technical, results-driven engineering projects happening around the world today, that’s only a portion of what they offer. Chant’s partnership with Talurit and recent acquisition of Cumberland Equipment is a testament to their continued growth and success, and allows them to become a “one stop shop” in the wire rope and rigging industries. Te company calls New Britain, Pennsylvania, home—
bolstered by a 50,000-square-foot “green design” manufacturing facility, and a team of over 50 employees led by Jim’s son Philip Chant, President and owner of the company. Chant Engineering’s advanced machines and designs
are used to test tension, compression, fatigue, and torsion. Aerospace and military components are developed at Chant, as well as high tech Aviation and Military test systems. Additionally, they specialize in completing worldwide turn-key engineering/testing projects with on-site installation, start-up, training, and documentation. A recent example of such a project is Sabre/Brametal
Testing Services, LLC’s new state of the art, full-scale structure testing facility. Commissioned in August, 2013, the facility was developed to test lattice towers and tubular steel structures up to 235’ high – as well as wood or concrete poles. Tis testing is accomplished by pulling the test towers in multiple directions with wire rope and winches. Occupying 10 acres, the testing facility is located on Sabre Industries existing 147 acre industrial complex; it is equipped to handle both destructive and non-destructive testing and complements Sabre’s extensive manufacturing and design capabilities. Spanning 15 months, the success of this project was due
to the efforts of Chant’s experienced team of mechanical, electrical, software and control engineers, led by software engineer David N. Cohen, in conjunction with Sabre Industries™. Sabre, based in Alvarado, TX, provides utility
