The fi xed bowsprit was removed and a sec- tion of the bow was cut away. A new bow section was built to incorporate a bearing for the sprit to rotate on as well as receive the strop for the head stay. The foredeck was cut away and a new section was built with a step to accommodate the inboard arms of the sprit when they travel transversely. A new bow pulpit was fabricated to fi t the new bow sprit. Mast – Original carbon mast was replaced with a new carbon mast to reduce weight and lower center of gravity. Mast was built by Axxon Composites in Romania and shipped as deck cargo direct to Portland. Keel Bulb – As a result of global weight savings achieved during the refi t, 140 kg of lead was cut off from the trailing edge of the bulb. A composite cone was built
and installed to retain the as designed bulb profi le. Water Ballast System – plumbing was modifi ed and a new, custom built, high volume pump was installed to increase tank fi ll and transfer times. Hatches – Custom, cored panel construction hatches were built to save weight. Deck – new non-skid paint was applied to the deck, cabin and cockpit. Rudders – new self-aligning upper rudder bearings were installed. Bottom – new race fi nish anti-foul. White on bottom and orange to keel and rudders. 90 Degree Test – Because of the signifi cant weight savings achieved during the refi t a new stability test was required to empirically prove that the pull up force at the mast head was still within Class 40 rules.
DRAGON will compete in the Atlantic Cup and the Newport-Bermuda race this summer before sailing to France for the Route du Rhum.

At Greene Marine in Yarmouth they are in the midst of getting boats ready for the summer sailing season. As you travel down Route 295 through Yarmouth that boat yard you see behind the Muddy Rudder restaurant is Green Marine. A Chris White designed 42-foot strip- planked trimaran had her starboard arma repaired. They also replaced the forward hatch, engine work, repaired the rub-rails and touched up her Awlgrip. SCOUT, a 37 footer designed by Walter Greene and built by them in 1999, was in to have her interior repainted. Last year they repainted her exterior. Waiting for repair to her aft carbon beam was a 40-foot trimaran. The quote was that the beam was “mush.”

Also in the yard just getting some minor improvements is the 16-foot ZIP, which was built a few years ago. They are making some minor improvements which includes: fl oors, removing the coamings so as to sit more people, and change the rudder.
Greene Marine is best known in France, but also here in the U. S. by those that sail multihulls. However they are capable of any type of work, wood or fi berglass, on any type of vessels, not just monohulls. If you are looking to have some work done this is one place you should talk to.
The very first Sabre yacht, was a Sabre 28 sailboat appropriately named PA- TIENCE. Sabre repurchased her from her original owners ten years ago. She is still in perfect condition but like any 40 year old boat she did need some attention to get her back to her Bristol condition. She had been sold in 1971 to our local dealership Handy Boat and her retail price with options w as $14,335.00.
