citement since it is sired by Quick Star (Galoubet out of Stella by Nithard). “We’re really excited about that breeding. The sire is currently third in the world for jumping sires.” “Jean Yves is very committed to the breed and very com-
mitted to seeing it grow in the U.S.,” Lori-Lynn continues. “I think that’s a key piece for the breeders feeling now they have a local contact and somebody lobbying for them as well.”
NEW NORMANDY FARM Over at New Normandy Farm LLC in Cochranville, Pennsyl-
vania, Anaud de Crevecoeur headlines the semen of stallion Baloubet du Rouet, best known for his international jumping success ridden by Brazil’s Rodrigo Pessoa and named the number one stallion two years in a row in the WBFSH ranking. New Normandy Farm specializes in show jumping, with an emphasis on selecting the best dams. “Most of our broodmares have been imported from
France,” says Arnaud. “Our goal is to provide leading Selle Français bloodlines to the North American upper level jumper market, producing sport horses suitable for both the amateur and professional rider. The Selle Français is the perfect sport horse for the rider who needs a partner rather than a wrestler opponent! And the Selle Français gene pool is possibly the richest in the world and the result of centuries of selection.” Now, with the reopening of the Selle Français registry in
Thoroughbred brings more blood to the pedigree and tends to give them a little bit more propulsion, momentum.” According to Lori-Lynne, SF horses cross well with other
breeds especially the Holsteiner. Her Selle Français mares have a lot of Cor de la Bryère blood (Rantzau / Lurioso), which is also popular with Holsteiners. (Lurioso was sired by the great Furioso.) Cor de la Bryère (1968-2000) was one of the most influential sires of modern-day Warmbloods and is known as one of the greatest stallions of the century, second only to Landgraf I. “He is actually a Selle Français initially but Holstein imported him and he’s one of the foundation sires for the Holsteiner breed,” notes Lori-Lynn. Lori-Lynn says the reopening of the U.S. Selle Français reg-
istry is certainly helpful. “That’s the one reason that our farm got involved in other breeds—because there was no rep- resentative for Selle Français in the United States any more. Since Jean Yves has brought it back to the United States, we actually have a liaison. Maybe that’s why you haven’t seen much of the breed in the show jumping world here in the U.S. I’m hoping that with Jean Yves starting it back up, he can bring the breed to the forefront in the United States.” Cove Springs Farm has three foals coming this year, two of which are Selle Français. the U.S., “the Selle Français is a major player in the equine world and given the tremendous jobs done by the ANSF-US, I expect the U.S. Selle Français studbook to have an important influence in the future,” he adds.
WORK IN PROGRESS According to Jean Yves, inspections will be conducted here
when they have stallions to approve, but at the moment the studbook is simply registering new foals and horses that have Selle Français papers of origin. It’s a fairly large task to identify who is where and who is doing what. Since the regis- try also works with Mexico and Canada, both with strong SF breeding programs, there’s plenty to do. “We have a lot of French mares here and quite a few
French stallions here too,” Jean Yves explains. “Mares that are not French who are bred to SF stallions can also be labeled Selle Français so that their offspring can be registered Selle Français.” “I’m basically trying to create awareness of the re-opening of the studbook,” he continues. “But I want to reopen the studbook in a very careful
way...it’s important that we have both an official and professional presence since we’re here to help support anyone in North America who wants to breed Selle Français horses.” It’s vital, he says, that American riders and breeders know that Selle Français horses have influenced so many other breeds in the last forty years. “They’re in the heart of every registry, and they’re the number one jumper horse right now in the world.”
