for Oldenburg breeding, and horses with known deviations in their legs which can be linked to later unsoundness are dealt with harshly. Stallions and mares should have robust good health unless caused from environmental issues such as smog, fire or something similar. Accidents are also for- given but generally good health is a first priority. Success with these breeding standards does not come easily—it takes great discipline, a fierce determination to succeed against great odds, dedicated individuals to up- hold the highest standards set by the national federation and the fortitude to hold the new organization to even higher goals.
Te largest breeding farm in the region, Gestuet Lewitz
owned by Paul Schockemoehle, breeds upwards of 1,000 mares each year making this a useful sounding board. Making careless decisions on such a large scale could ruin the farm financially and so each one is made carefully and quickly. Stallions that do not “cut the mustard” are re- moved from the breeding shed as soon as this is clear. Te farm also breeds with many outside stallions, not only those in residence. It has “taken a village” to develop an organization quickly and this was facilitated with much help using an open book policy and many, many committed breeders. Te results have been phe- nomenal. In the 13 years since the new division was formed, it has been remarkably prolific in providing top-class horses, with high standards of jumping ability, willingness to perform, rideability, quick reflexes and very good conformation with correct founda- tions. Te first horses produced under these programs are now, at 12 and 13, at the top of their competitive careers.
IMPRESSIVE GROWTH & SUCCESS Our jumping association, Springpferdzuchtverband Oldenburg- International, was founded on May 23, 2001 and has grown enor- mously. Currently there are close to 1,800 members with nearly 2,500 mares. Concentrating on bringing the best breeding stock together to advance the breeding of jumpers as quickly as possible has been our goal. Other major breed organizations have taken much longer to
reach similar results. We are proud that in such a short time the Oldenburg has caught up to other organizations that have essen- tially dedicated themselves to producing jumpers. Tis is thanks,
of course, to our high quality, dedicated breeders. We would also like to emphasize that in North America we have farms and breed- ers that are also jumping on board supporting the Oldenburg. Tese horses are younger and presented later on in this article. In 2013, at the German National Championships (Bunde- schampionat), the Oldenburg Jumping Association had many champions, with many more youngsters filling out the ranks. Quinghai, born 2007, by Quidam de Ravel out of Mon Cheri by Cordalme-Landadel, bred by Helmut Fischer and Bad Gries- bach, became Bundeschampion of the six-year-olds. His rider was 17-year-old Guido Klatte Jr. (son of Guido Klatte, famous horse transport shipping company owner and partner of Tim Dutta). Lannaro, born in 2006, by Larino out of out of Wannara by Kan- nan-CentauerZ-Continue, bred by Gestuet Lewitz, was the first champion of the newly established class for seven-year-old horses. He was ridden by Mandy Goosen. Our North American entry in the five-year-old division of the
Bundeschampionat in 2013 was Lestat, owned by Canadians Jen- nifer and Armin Arnholdt’s Dreamscape Farm. Born in 2008, by Lordanos out of Monique by Concetto-Silvio 1, bred by Werner Behrens and ridden by Philip Winkelhaus, he finished fourth in the preliminary round and second in second qualifying round and eighth overall out of 128 horses. Make no mistake; the jumps are like mountains and the time difficult, with a huge water jump and bending lines to the next fence. Tis is a wonderful placing and we are very proud that Jennifer and Armin’s horse did so well. He was a graduate of the 2010 Oldenburg Stallion Licensing and ap- proved as a breeding stallion upon meeting the criteria for passing his test (with a very good score) and qualifying for the Bundes- championat (8.5) which he excelled at.
