SAN DIEGO THEATRE BRIEFS:
INTO THE WOODS San Diego has been the birthplace for many
a successful Broadway production; The Full Monty, RENT, Hands on a Hardbody and A Gentle- men’s Guide to Love and Murder are just a few of the smash hits that have originated here on our western shores. One of the greatest of all time, Into The Woods, returns after three decades to its birthplace at The Old Globe Theatre, from Saturday, July 12 through Sunday, August 10.
Music and lyrics are by Broadway’s great Ste-
phen Sondheim, with book by James Lapine. This smash hit has reaped many awards and reprisals. Pulled from some of Grimm’s most famed fairy tales, the plot features characters borrowed from Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella, as well as others, all woven together within the original story of a childless baker, his wife and the witch’s curse preventing their familial wishes from coming true. THE ORPHAN OF ZHAO Often referred to as the Chinese Hamlet, this
epic legend has its roots back in the fourth century BCE and has been responsible for inspiring numerous operas, plays and movies. Essentially, it is a tale about a country doctor, who, in order to save the last heir of a local noble from massacre by the poisoned mind of the Emperor, sacrifices his son in soon-to- be-orphaned Zhao’s place. When Zhao learns of his origins, his revenge is not only daring, it is complete in this spellbinding telling of family, loyalty and corruption. Artistic Director Christopher Ashley says, “This is a play that proves the classics are as gripping and fresh as anything in theatres today. It’s an edge- of-your-seat drama full of twists and turns, revenge and murder and ultimately sacrifice.” The play features Tony award-winner BD Wong (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) and runs from Tuesday, July 8 through Sunday, August 3 at the La Jolla Playhouse, 2910 La Jolla Village Drive in La Jolla. THE FULL MONTY This July, New Village Arts is getting ready to bare it all. If you’ve seen or read about The Full Monty, you’ll know
exactly what I’m talkin’ about. Originally conceived as a British comedy-drama film in 1997, set in Sheffield, England, it tells the story of six unemployed men, the majority of which are former steelworkers. The musical adaptation premiered at The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego in 2000, opening later that year on Broadway in New York and running for 770 performances. The musical version is set in Buffalo, New York and our six unemployed steelworkers are again looking for a
new way to earn money. After witnessing the success of a Chippendales act, they land on the idea of creating a show locally, as a way to “man-i-fest” a little cash. As the men prepare for their big reveal, each “Hot Steel” performer sheds not only their clothes, they peel away a myriad of inner insecurities, as they prepare to go “the full monty.” The Full Monty runs from Saturday, July 26 through Sunday, September 7 at the New Village Arts Theatre, 2787 State Street in Carlsbad. SAN DIEGO FRINGE FESTIVAL What the heck is a Fringe Festival you ask?
Their website’s definition says it best; “Fringe is a grass roots festival with freedom to celebrate and exchange. It’s a fringe of a festival or a festival of fringe arts made possible by the people who take part. Developed organically across the globe, they are unique in style and form every time they open. A Fringe Festival exists to serve the participating artists and audiences through building awareness. They professionally umbrella an accessible development opportunity by administrating a programme of events and creating a platform and market place for new and established art forms. They are constituted through innova- tion and creative expression. The Fringe ethos is, ‘If you want to do it you can… Fringes offer an alternative!’” Confused? Well don’t be. Fringe is basically
a platform for local, national and international artists to perform a wide variety of acts—and we mean W-I-D-E. Multiple events take place from Thursday, July 3 through Sunday, July 13, on multiple stages throughout San Diego, ranging from theatre to dance, live art demonstrations, staged book readings, work- shops and improv, filled with commentary on just about every topic, in every genre you can imagine. Look for the performances by Tamara Saari Dance, Riddle, Rondstadt & Robyn as per- formed by Robyn Spangler, Pretending Things are a Cock by Jon Bennett, Disclosure from the Archive Project, Miss M Saves the Universe, from the Breakthrough Workshop and many, many other offerings topical to our diverse San Diego community.
