SUMMER CELEBRATIONS PAINT THE SKY WITH COLORS

Here we go again! The Fourth of July and San Diego Pride are here once more and

I’m reminded that summer has arrived with a happy vengeance. There is so much to do, it’s at times a little disconcerting as to what fun to choose.

On top of all the local Pride events and their ensuing fun, there are a ton of amazing summer music spectacles all over Southern California. From DJs and massive music/ dance festivals to major symphony events and small indoor and outdoor venues featuring amazing local talent. I had the pleasure of going to my first opening night event at the Hollywood Bowl

(I know, I know, what took me so long…) and after many years of anticipation, I certainly was not let down. There is something about attending an event at such a iconic venue, especially when it has such an amazing provenance. For as long as I can remember, the Bowl has been a part of the American concert landscape, with more famed performers than can be counted. I had the pleasure of listening to Kristin Chenoweth perform, along with Pink

Martini and The Go-Go’s, all of whom were inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame that night. It was a perfect evening to sit back, relax and reflect, as we enjoyed a glass of wine and took in the breadth of the performances, as accompanied by the LA Phil. It was a perfect cross-section of the musical world; classic orchestral opening, some great big-band swing from Pink Martini, a bit of Go-Go pop, along with a big punch of Broadway from Chenoweth and surprise guest Lea Michele. The latter pair was a special treat for me, due to the fact that I have had the honor of chatting with both of them. Check another off the bucket list for me! My lugubrious point to all of this, is that we are so blessed here in Southern Cali-

fornia. Along with all of the amazing LGBT events, we have amazing access to world renowned performers, pretty much every weekend throughout the Southland. As an added bonus, we get to view them beyond the walls of a typical performance hall, with only the gorgeous stars above. Recently in June, L.A. Pride also sported exciting options, the phenomenal Jennifer Hudson, Azelia Banks and The Bangles. This month, San Diego Pride is offering up dance diva Deborah Cox, Glee’s Alex Newell and Charise, to name just a few. Even the small parks throughout the city have concert events, I’m reminded every

weekend night when delightful music wafts across the canyon near where I live. Sweet sounds as the backdrop to summer living—perfection. There is never enough time to do and see it all. But my friends, let’s all give it our

best shot! Here’s hoping we see each other out there …
