A recent survey posed the question: "How big a problem is bullying and harassment in your organization?‖ Most respondents (40%) reported only occasional low-grade tension, and 29% reported no problems at all. Another 21% indicated that a few cases had occurred but were never formalized, and 10% indicated several formal complaints of bullying and harassment at their workplaces. Employers must recognize their increasing responsibility with respect to workplace bullying and harassment.

NEW ZEALAND: Spotlight on Domestic Violence


Employers may be asked to do more for staff who are victims of domestic violence, if the Domestic Violence-Victims' Protection Bill is passed by Parliament. Green Party MP Jan Logie wants employers to give staff facing trouble at home an extra 10 days' paid leave, for employers to have easier access to current systems that help support victims, and to have domestic violence treated as a health and safety at work issue. Her bill says domestic violence does not easily fit the definitions of workplace violence, such as bullying or violent customers. "This bill addresses this current gap in legislation," said Logie.

UNITED KINGDOM: A 61-Year-Old Female Teacher Was Stabbed


A devoted teacher was stabbed to death in front of her horrified class by a pupil said to have a grudge against her. Children screamed as the 15-year-old boy calmly walked up behind Ann Maguire and repeatedly stabbed her in the neck with a kitchen knife. It is thought to be the first time a pupil has killed a teacher in a British classroom. Fellow pupils said she had recently given the boy a detention and he told other pupils she was ‗always getting at him‘. A classmate described the teenager as having few friends, saying he had been bullied previously and taken anti-depressants.

The 2011 Workplace Violence Prevention and Intervention standard produced jointly by ASIS International and the Society for Human Resource Management suggests a list of the departments in an organization with a role in Workplace Violence Prevention and Intervention (WVPI).


The standard does not make a similar suggestion as to which department should take the lead. That begs the question, in actual application, is it generally the case that one department has lead or primary responsibility or are the various aspects and functions of WVPI dispersed among different departments?


We have composed a short survey of four multiple choice questions to gather information about actual WVPI practices. The results of his survey could be very useful in developing a greater understanding of which practices are
