look forward to summer like a school kid. As this issue goes to press, I’ll be packing for a season of trade shows and store visits that will take me to


New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Las Vegas, San Francisco and back to New York in August. I hope to meet many of you along the way. At 20+ summer show locations, vendors are busy readying showrooms and designing booths to feature the newest products, as they know that’s what we all want to see – or at least 92%* of us, according to the Center for Exhibition Industry Research. Shows will host celebrity guests – chefs, interior designers, artists and authors and many vendors are scheduling meet-and-greets where you can network with other retailers. If possible, build some time into your summer show schedules to take advantage of the educational opportunities offered at the marts. It’s our industry’s version of summer school. Experts conduct seminars on dozens of topics including visual merchandising, store event ideas, social media and retail operations. During your search for the best new products, take note of recurring themes


and trends to plan your merchandise mix and store displays. I think you will notice butterflies and shades of denim blue that you can get a sneak peek of in this issue’s trends section. Also watch for some exciting collaborations to debut at the shows. Please don’t be shy to stop me in the aisles, elevator, shuttle bus or stick
