T

he list of things affecting our lives, our health and our world can be intimidating. Consider these words: Microbeads (page 9), GMOs (page 9), Glyphosate (page 10). As recently as 10 to 20 years ago, these words above meant nothing to most of the population. Eventually they entered the fringes of our lives and gradually they became (or will become) everyday words and phrases. Often it’s easier to dismiss the information rather than tackle all that we would need to do to understand them. Sometimes we don’t have a choice and are pulled into a world that previously

may have had no connection to us (such as cancer, concussions or diabetes). Other times, we are drawn to it and know deep inside that it matters. We follow the path to learn all we can about whatever it is (such as health care, fracking, GMOs or animal cruelty) and then share that information with others. It would be impossible for each of us to fight all the battles, debate all the conflicting

research and learn all there is to know about every controversial subject that pokes its head into our lives. For this reason, we need to follow our hearts. We know intrinsically what matters to us and what we need to do. Natural Awakenings seeks to bridge the gap between what’s going on in the world

and why it may matter to you. We work to introduce you to research and ideas that may be new to you. Or you already may be intimately familiar with something and you’re glad to see it recognized in our magazine. I think by now we’ve all heard of synergy, the concept that “2+2 = 5” because of the added energy and ideas that group thinking promotes.

Arriving at one goal is the starting point to another. ~John Dewey

Synergy is the interaction of multiple elements in a system to produce an effect different from or greater than the sum of their individual effects. The term synergy comes from the Greek word synergia, from synergos, meaning “working together” (from Wikipedia).

The fact is, none of us can do it all. We need to pick and choose where we spend our time, which social injustices we want to eradicate and which movements we want to support with our time and/or money. The important thing, I think, is that we stand for something. We can learn about it, educate others, write letters and do whatever we feel compelled to do to support that cause, whatever it may be. We shouldn’t worry about doing it all (remember, “Jack of all trades, master of

none”). We can start where we are and follow our hearts. In this way, we can help create the world we want to live in.
