News Funds stolen
COLLECTION boxes supporting two local charities have been stolen from the Shop on the Green, Chart Sutton. Thieves smashed a window in
the community-run cabin and took the tins belonging to the Heart of Kent Hospice and Buttercups Goat Sanctuary. It is thought the thefts took place
on May Bank Holiday Monday, when the shopwas closed. The community shop, which is manned by volunteers and sells groceries and newspapers, also of- fers some Post Office services. It has been a target for thieves in
the past – the worst case being an armed robbery in June 2012, when the shopkeeper was threatened at knifepoint. Anyone with information is
asked to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Shop conversion
A FORMER shop in High Street, Yalding, is to be converted to resi- dential use. A planning application, which
will be determined by Maidstone Council, requests that part of The Coach House, once known as The Stores, becomes a separate dwelling to the rest of the building. The shop ceased trading 20 years ago because itwas no longer viable.

Drink-driver jailed for death of pensioner
ALADDINGFORDman who was over the legal drink-drive limit has been jailed for four years after causing the death of a pensioner near PaddockWood. Liam Davis (26), of Cleavesland,
had been drinking in two separate pubs prior to a head-on collision on December 3, 2012. His Land Rover Freelander col-
lided with a Peugeot 406 being driven by 73-year-old Brenchley and Matfield parish councillor Ronald Berry at a bend in Queen Street at 6.45pm. Mr Berry was trapped in his car and pronounced dead at the scene. Davis had been making his way
from Brenchley to Yalding when the collision occurred. Breath tests showed he had 61mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mg. Davis admitted to being over the drink-drive limit, but had denied the collisionwas a result of his care- less driving. He told officers Mr Berry’s car had been travelling to- wards him on his side of the road and the collision occurred after he had tried to swerve to avoid it.
tended test in order to be allowed back on the road again. Passing sentence, Judge Martin
Joy said there was “clear and com- pelling evidence” that drinking had contributed to the fatal collision. Judge Joy said: “I accept you are deeply remorseful and were shocked by what you had done. Clearly, no one can turn the clock back.
“However, you drove in an un- Liam Davis
The jury heard Mr Berry had medical problems which included his sight and it may have been un- wise for him to be driving at night. Davis attempted to free Mr Berry from his car following the collision. The jury found him guilty of causing death by careless driving whilst over the prescribed limit and he was sentenced to four years in jail. Davis was also banned from driving for four years and told he would be required to pass an ex-
safe manner without sufficient care. In my judgement itwas drink that caused inattention. It was not a momentary inattention.” PC Graham Holdstock, of the
Kent Police Serious Crash Investi- gation Unit said the death of Mr Berry was a tragic reminder of the consequences of drink-driving. PC Holdstock said: “This case is
sadly an example of how the reck- less and selfish actions of those who drive in an unfit state can have such devastating consequences. “I only hope that Mr Berry’s
tragic death will remind people to think twice when they get into a vehicle and to never drink and drive.”
