WHO IS YOUR DESIGN ICON? Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe
WHAT IS HE MOST FAMOUS FOR? He was famous for more than just one project. He created timeless architecture structures that have inspired so many but in 1927 he designed one of his most famous buildings – The German Pavilion at the International Exposition in Barcelona.
HOW WAS THEIR WORK RECEIVED DURING THE PERIOD IN WHICH THEY WERE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL? He is widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture by creating a new modern style in an old era. I am sure people were wary to begin with of his bold style and brave choice of fresh materials such as industrial steel and plate glass but once his ‘skin & bones’ structure with stood the test of time, it would have been hard for anyone to disagree with it.
WHY HAVE YOU CHOSEN LUDWIG MIES VAN DER ROHE AS YOUR ‘ICON’? The fact that he was ahead of time, completely creative and innovative in that sense – that is something I really admire. The passion he felt for his projects was evident in his work, which I love and it was as if he constantly drove himself to new challenges – to see how far he could take stripping down a building to the bare necessities.
WHICH PROJECTS FROM YOUR OWN PORTFOLIO DEMONSTRATE A NOD TO LUDWIG MIES VAN DER ROHE’S WORK? All of them! I love the minimalistic look that he was so fond of and hope that in some ways my works reflects that. People sometimes forget that interior design isn’t just about the finishing touches and the colour schemes that in fact the space and architectural structure of the room is just as important. I highlight that in each of my projects and my full use of the structures.
IF YOU COULD BE REMEMBERED FOR ONE ELEMENT OF YOUR DESIGN, WHAT WOULD IT BE? The ability to create harmonious interiors that feel great! That is fundamentally what I am known for now and what I hope to be known for the in the future. Iconic design that lasts!
